Pool of the Year 2019
WINNER | Blue Stone Pools
Zorzi Homes designed and built this luxury Mount Pleasant residence. Set high upon the river escarpment with city views, set the canvas footprint to design a swimming pool that not only took advantage of the river/city views, but also a central hub that truly reflected a lifestyle feel. The overall lifestyle design had to be exceptionally modern and sophisticated, that complimented the building’s contemporary luxury architecture, and capture the breathtaking views. The pool builder worked very closely with Zorzi’s team of architects who designed and fitted the hardscape surrounds and high-end appliances, to ensure it all worked seamlessly with the new swimming pool design, that will ultimately frame the views and enhance an already spectacular vista, a prerequisite design discipline.
Maximising the use of the property’s radical descending parcel of land, the swimming pool design, is cleverly suspended fully, above the lower basement level, allowed for elevated commanding river views from the pool deck area, whilst also allowing for now a huge open area beneath. This area created is now used to house the 12- car garage, car wash station, gymnasium, sauna, wet bar and home theatre making it a resort feature extension forming the water shape zone above. The swimming pool’s equipment room is also situated beneath, at the lower level, that controls all the sanitation, heating, lighting and water features of the pool deck, which is also linked via the homes automation. All the entertainment zones can be access by marble stairway to and from each level, avoiding wet swimmers and servicemen having to enter the main home.
A 16-metre infinity pool was tiled in glass mosaics, which water accurately spills over into the catchment trough behind. The main swimming zone was finished in a custom blend of glass pebble to match the watercolour of the river. Attached to the main pool at one end an additional social hub was created, the wet zone, in form of an elevated fully tiled spa. Predominately situated with all the internal features you would expect from this resort style watershape, all finished with polished stainless steel outlet fittings.
At the opposite end is another hub, this dry zone that acts as a relaxing social hub when wanting to embrace the ambiance of the space around water without necessarily wanting to be wet. Within this area, features a fire-pit and seating with an impressive copper look water bowl as a backdrop, complete with a LED lite base simulating fire. The fire bowl’s water gently cascading back into the pool, circulates via its own water pump.
The children aren’t forgotten in the build either, adjacent to the spa zone is a fully tiled 4m wading area measuring 400mm in depth for the young ones to sit and play whilst being guarded by the adults when in the main pool. Safety being paramount a glass screen was imbedded around this zone’s perimeter. Raising the spa was also adopted to help prevent the ease of climbing. The rock edge at each end was use to connect the alfresco finishing’s into the material palette, with the recess negative detail to also prevent a foothold.
Like all good design, if the swimming pool is the central focus both aesthetically as well as socially, it must flow seamlessly from the alfresco cooking, dining and seating areas. This has been achieved via a deck area that connects these areas to the pool. The pool is entered via a leading 10m-tiled step onto another fully tiled wetdeck, that not only serves space for the imported pool furniture but acts as the central access point for all the pool’s zones. The water deck is lit with 8 tiny RGB button lights along the step face with an additional concealed led light strip along underside of the entry step.
To further enhance the grandeur experience of this ultimate lifestyle, Ozoneswim was chosen to give the natural feel and taste of fresh water sanitation. Pool is heated by an 80kw commercial grade Accent heater that was craned over from the road to it location down at basement level. The spa that is heated separately by a state of the art commercial grade boiler and titanium heat exchanger enables heating of the spa from cold in less than 15minutes.
